I picked up The Unquiet Spirit expecting a gentle ghost story, but it quickly became much more than that. Penny Hampson draws the reader straight into Kate Wilson’s world, creating a wonderfully atmospheric setting that feels authentic and quietly unsettling. The Cornish house is beautifully described, with its strange noises and lingering sense of history, and I loved how the mystery unfolds at a steady pace. Rather than relying on shock or horror, the story builds tension through mood and emotion, which kept me thoroughly absorbed.
Kate is a likeable and believable heroine, and I found it easy to become invested in her journey. The developing relationship between Kate and Tom adds warmth and balance to the story, offering moments of tenderness alongside the supernatural intrigue. Their connection feels natural and unforced, and the romantic elements sit comfortably within the wider mystery. I also appreciated the thoughtful way the paranormal aspects are handled, giving the story a sense of poignancy rather than fear.
By the time I reached the final page, I felt both satisfied and eager to continue the series. The Unquiet Spirit is haunting without being dark, romantic without being overdone, and engaging from beginning to end. Penny Hampson has written a story with heart, atmosphere, and depth, and I would happily recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well-crafted ghost story. A well-deserved five-star read.
