Walker has done it again!!! I've enjoyed her books before, and Dragonslayer's Valkyrie is another fabulous read. As someone who has always been fascinated by Norse mythology, I loved seeing the legend of Sigurd and Brynhildr brought to life with so much heart, adventure, and romance. The romance—it's absolutely swoon-worthy!
Sigurd and Brynhildr are both brilliantly portrayed. Brynhildr has a clear idea of how she wants her life to be... and then she meets Sigurd! What I love most about Sigurd is that he never tells Brynhildr what to do. He loves her deeply, but he never tries to control her. Likewise, Brynhildr makes her own decisions about whether immortality really is all it's cracked up to be.
The Sjórúlfar initiation was one of my favourite parts of the book. It was exciting, intense, and really showed the determination needed to earn a place among the brotherhood. I also liked the way the Norse gods were woven into the story.
The Viking setting was easy to picture, and the mix of mythology, history, romance, and adventure kept me turning the pages well into the night. It was one of those books that was difficult to put down because I always wanted to know what was going to happen next.
If you enjoy Viking stories, Norse mythology, or historical fantasy with a strong romance at its heart, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a try.
